Determining the Length of Your eBook
[Approximate Reading Time : 3 mins]
How Long Should Your Book Be?
You’ve got an idea for what you want your eBook to be about, and you’ve got an outline. Before you dive into your story, you may wonder how long your work should be. The answer to this question is determined by the type of book you’re writing and its genre.
Book Type and Length
Here’s a quick snapshot of different types of books and their typical page lengths:
- Children’s picture book: 500–600 words (32–48 pages)
- Children’s chapter book: 1,000–10,000 words
- Middle grade: 20,000–50,000 words
- Young Adult: 40,000–70,000 words
- Flash fiction: 500 words or fewer
- Short Story: 5,000–10,000 words
- Novella: 10,000–40,000 words
- Novel: Over 40,000 words
You also have to consider genre when it comes to word count. For instance, if you’re self-publishing a sci-fi or fantasy novel, you can aim for anywhere from 90,000 to 120,000 words, while the standard word count for romance novels is between 50,000 and 100,000.
Let the Story Have Its Say
With the above numbers and genres, bear in mind current trends such as that sci-fi and fantasy KDP novellas are gaining popularity. With shorter works selling now, your story shouldn’t be a word longer than necessary. Essentially, you want to consider your audience and current marketability when deciding on page and word length.
