2019 was a rewarding year for indie authors and 2020 looks even more promising. There has never been a better time to be a writer. Let’s look at some of the key trends to consider, that can help you better plan and achieve your writing goals as an author.

Making a living as a self-published author

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said that in 2017 over a thousand indie authors earned over $100,000 in royalties through Kindle Direct Publishing. While another market research revealed that self-published e-books that were paid for increased from 44.7% in 2017 to 46.4% in 2018. These statistics bear out the fact that the self-publishing ecosystem is going from strength to strength. And indie authors stand an incredible opportunity to earn higher royalties and enjoy more freedom.

Designing books to sell

As the market continues to grow the competition will get aggressive and so will the efforts to cut the noise and stand out. Book covers, designs, layout, images, photography, and color schemes will all play a big role in how well you position your book. ‘Less is more’ philosophy will continue to reign, while clean lines, inspired and contemporary looks will help you create a mark. With a rise in demand, design services will become easily accessible, and the need to use them even more pronounced.

Promoting books in advance

2019 witnessed self-published authors going all out to promote their books way before their release, sometimes even before they finished their manuscript.  This trend shows no sign of relenting, if anything, given the extensive growth of self-published books, promoting/marketing your book way early in the cycle and often, will become a business imperative. Look for new tools, resources and techniques and do not get discouraged if it fails, just learn and keep going. You will soon find a perfect rhythm and ways to build anticipation and awareness.
