What should you do after you finish your manuscript?

[Approximate Reading Time : 3 mins]

At last, you finished writing your book. And as you type the word ‘the end’ you feel a sense of accomplishment. Truly so, your hard work, creativity and time, all bundled in your manuscript, which is now ready to be published.

There is no doubt that you have achieved a great feat. But your journey is far from over. This was just the first milestone. Here are the next steps after you finish your manuscript.

#1 Give yourself and your book a break

Do not start revising and editing immediately. As you invest weeks, months and sometimes years writing a book, you tend to develop a myopic vision which makes it difficult to assess the manuscript properly. Peeling yourself away from your book allows you to reboot and approach it with a fresh and new perspective.

#2 Get social and build online visibility

While your book rests, use this time to take to social media and build some visibility for your upcoming book. There are plenty of ways to approach this, start a blog, create Twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts, join similar genre author communities, participate and share stories with relevant hashtags. Check out reviews and ratings of other authors.

#3 Time to revisit your manuscript

Start by approaching from a big picture perspective before you launch into line editing. This way you can iron out any plot holes or inconsistencies before you get into the tedious work of revision and restructuring.

Lastly, decide which route you want to take traditional or self-publishing? If you decide you go with the former, use your social media time to research and identify publishing houses and agents and make a list of potential ones. But if you want to self-publish, choose a self-publishing service provider that has a demonstrated publishing record across digital and print medium.
